Background
|
Pakatan Rakyat (PR), ahead of the upcoming 13th General Elections, has decided with its coalition partners and a number of PR allied civil society organisations/ NGOs to organise a mammoth rally in Kuala Lumpur. Expected to be the grand finale of a series of smaller similar gatherings organised by the coalition, this rally is expected to be well attended by PR members and supporters.
The event is a culmination of sorts for all civil society movements against purportedly unfair government policies and decisions, as well as pro-change, pro-democracy and pro-opposition groups, and a massive show of force to frighten the ruling administration away from cheating during the coming polls. He also indicated that regardless of the political nature of the rally, the involvement of civil society movements meant that the groups want their demands delivered ― from the scrapping of the Lynas plant in Kuantan, to the promise of fair royalty payments to oil-producing states, free education and a fair polls process.
Similar to the previous Bersih 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 rallies in the past, the demand for free and fair elections will lead as the key message of the event.
Rally organisers will be meeting with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar at 2.30pm today to discuss the event. Based on past precedence, it is unlikely that they will be able to secure permission to organise this rally. The organisers have also thus far been unsuccessful in obtaining clearance from the management of Stadium Merdeka to organise this rally at that venue.
The rally is expected to proceeded regardless of whether there is permission from police or Stadium Merdeka.
Electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 had tried in 2011 to organise a rally for free and fair elections at the same Stadium Merdeka venue but was turned down by the Government at the last minute. Rally participants proceeded anyway to throng the streets of the capital on July 9, 2011, resulting in a scene of chaos as riot police invaded the event armed with tear gas and water cannons.
The Bersih 3.0 rally in 2012 which was attended by more than 100,000 people also resulted in police action with tear gas and water cannons as well numerous arrests and reports of alleged police brutal and hard handling of rally participants.
The event in 2011 marked a milestone in the growth of civil society in Malaysia and the widespread international condemnation against the government’s hard handed tactics and handling of rally participants.
